I finally managed to have nautilus run on my system. I have to launch
it from inside gnome-panel.

Three scenarios:

1. gnome-panel not running
calling nautilus from inside a terminal, it works; as soon as I
change virtual desktop it crashes; if I call it again, it crashes
immediately; sometimes, some other X applications crashes at the same
   time

2. gnome-panel running
calling nautilus from inside a terminal, same as above: gnome-panel
   crashes together with nautilus

3. gnome-panel running
calling nautilus from the gnome-panel menu everything works as
   expected.

In this third case, here is what I get on the terminal from where I
called gnome-panel:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gnome-panel
Unable to open desktop file /usr/share/applications/epiphany.desktop for panel
launcher: Error reading file '/usr/share/applications/epiphany.desktop': File
not found
--- and, after calling nautilus from the "Places menu" ---
Initializing gnome-mount extension
** Message: drive = 0
** Message: volume = 0
--- the above two lines repeated 23 times more ---
