sorry for the delay. It’s gnome-terminal. Indeed, in xterm it works. But
running “cat” in my gnome-terminal, I see Alt-something sequences:

~/projekte/latexki $ cat
^[z^[u^[i^[o^[p

so it is passed to the application in at least. In vi, pressing Ctrl-V
Alt-I produces ^[i, with the escape char being blue, wheres vi unter
xterm produces é when pressing Ctrl-V Alt-I (or just Alt-I) in Insert
mode.

Both terminals set TERM to xterm.

Where is the bug to be found? vim or gnome-terminal?
