Hello,
I fail to understand the issue.

If I enter blah in the URL bar and press the search button and
afterwards press the new-tab-button I get a new tab with empty URL
bar.

I gather there used to be a special search field/bar. Is this correct?

The only similar I can see in iceape is the search sidebar, which is
not attached to specific tab and therefore does not change when
switching tabs.
