We have 2.6.18 in etch. The corresponding alsa release is 1.0.12rc1,
which isn't optimal for your card.

As you are comfortable to build customized kernels ist should be
easy to build the drivers for your sound card out of alsa-source
etch version, which is 1.0.13. There we made significant
optimizations to your ALC650E codec.
