Why do you want to install both?
Because they work slightly differently. For example, I was nearly able to
solve a printing problem with CUPS today by using poppler-utils instead of
xpdf-utils. Not quite, but pstopdf from poppler-utils worked better than
xpdf-utils's pstopdf.
