Yes, it will use whatever is installed, unless two different things are installed. Then it will use the first it founds, as it checks sequencially. Of course you can say that the best thing is to install hibernate and use it to select the suspend method. I don't know pm-utils, but I hope they are as efficient as hibernate. The problem out there is that there is a plethora of laptops out there with different needs to hibernate or suspend to RAM.
