It looks like this was caused by the default setting of lock_login in /etc/opensc/opensc.conf. I set it to false, and this has not happened since. It remains, as far as I can see, this package's bug that it freezes Iceweasel when that setting is true (which happens to be the default). It might also be a good idea to document the need to change that setting.
