Do you have the driver loaded (what does 'lsmod | grep ipw3945' show)? It is probably possible to get a message like that by running a daemon manually before loading the driver, but that's not a normal mode of operation. Try modprobe -r ipw3945 modrpobe ipw3945 This will (re)insert the ipw3945 module and automatically starts the daemon.
