desktop-file-install is only a tool to twist .desktop files and install
them in some directory. I think you can use the widespread mechanism
named "patching" for .desktop files as it works quite well. As for
installing them, install or dh_install also do this job - and they are
unnecessary if the upstream application is using automake.
