It does comparable things (lock, expiration), and is useful for remembering the other commands. This isn't just a hypothetical request: I would have used the usermod interface if passwd has referred to it; instead, I ended up using vipw (er, actually vim..).
Plus, they're in the same package, so no chance to have one installed and not the other (plus, the package is Prio: required, so is essen^Walmost guaranteed to be available). usermod already refers to passwd. Cheers Justin
