How about this, then: after I added the two lines as you described and updated the initramfs and rebooted, the output shown after swap was opened was shown so briefly I didn't see what it said and /then/ it did the resume! Not sure what to believe here... the suspend fs has been there surviving two or three boots since the first (and only) failed resume. On the other hand, the system has also been upgraded a number of times since the suspend - did the init scripts change recently, perhaps?
