found 393794 0.5.8.1-6.1 thanks KDE doesn't automount USB sticks or CD-ROMs for me either. I'm running KDE 3.5.6.dfsg.1-2.
The device nodes are created correctly, and the devices show up in hal-device-manager. Marcus
