ok - more details which might help:

that specific problem is caused by the collision between /usr/bin/rubber
and /usr/share/rubber/rubber -- import rubber sucks in /usr/bin/rubber -
probably because active directory is /usr/bin/ and it is first in
sys.path.

besides that module expand seems to be very very outdated - I've tried
to proceed and fix it up to a working state but got stuck on 
self.doc.do_process
since LaTeXDep doesn't have that any longer...

I would really appreciate prompt forwarding upstream I guess since the
issue seems to be not a few lines fix.
