Some people, such as me, have seen a similar bug vanish after applying the patch attached to Debian bug #358929 on 13 Aug 2006 by arno. Are you in a position to try this ? This might help getting a fixed cdcat version in Debian... If needed, I can provide you with a patched package for i386 or ppc.
