With 2.6.20 hitting unstable I had a go at upgrading and encountered the same issue as the original reporter.
Using "module-assistant a-i nvidia" with nvidia-kenerl-source v1.0.9746-2 from experimental I get compilation errors due to "GPL-incompatible module nvidia.ko uses GPL-only symbol" http://lwn.net/Articles/205644/ has some info on the kernel changes that are causing the problems, but I'm not sure what the best way to deal with it in Debian is.
