I guess it is the best choice, at least for etch.

maildrop is setgid mail, I have thus used:
dpkg-statoverride --add daemon mail 0750 /var/run/courier/authdaemon

I do not use any other parts of the courier framework, I am not sure
changing the group of /var/run/courier/authdaemon could have some other
consequences.
