The freeze appears to have been fixed with xserver 1.3RC5 (1.2.99.905-1). The Xv blue window appears to be related to the position of output devices) the bug appears on laptop screens but the Xv video will play correctly on an external monitor. Addressed in upstream bug #10645. Retitling accordingly.
