It took me a while, but here I am.

I have a preliminary package of VXL 1.8.0. It builds the VXL core as static
libs. I had to disable MPEG2 support, though. Everything should be
documented in the package changelog and README.Debian.

I've uploaded the package to mentors.d.n

I'd be glad if you could have a look at it.

A nice addon would be support for shared libs. I added a (disabled) patch
that demonstrates how it could work. However, it doesn't make sense to
do this without upstream.
