Keeping WEP keys in a file separate from /etc/network/interfaces
is a good idea, in my opinion. It would be useful if the user
could specify:

iface foo addrfam method
    wireless-key-id bar

with the result being that the key named 'bar' would be looked
up in a configuration file, /etc/wireless-tools/keys, and sent
to iwconfig in the same manner as a key explicitly given on a
"wireless-key" option line. The /etc/wireless-tools/keys file
should be readable by root only.

I saw this issue discussed in one of the ubuntu bug logs and I
think that the consensus there was that this should be fixed
after Hoary. This feature would benefit Debian users in
general, so I think it should be implemented upstream in Debian.
It should not be hard to implement.
