However, life is there. I can still shut-down by pressing the

Have you tried turning all the Vbe options off?

Have you tried
  Runi915resolution yes and no

and is i915resolution installed?

I did not have i915resolution installed and have seen some success stories on google with this. It is installed now, I just need to know if the ram.conf is read when running "s2ram -f"? If I run hibernate-ram it will fall over with unsupported hardware now because it is using s2ram (uswsusp) but I cannot pass the -f switch. Running s2ram -f suspends, but has the same problem (but is ram.conf being used with this method)? There seem to be many methods of suspend. There are 2 options in the ram.conf: sysfs-ram and ususpend-ram. Both are set to be tried. It is a little confusing what script or method the machine uses at any one time.

As a workaround to the above I un-installed uswsusp and ran hibernate-ram with /etc/hibernate/ram.conf set with Runi915resolution yes and had the same problem. The Vbe options were commented out.
