Do you have any hints how to tell CDBS that it doesn't need to unapply
patches when it just killed the build-tree anyway?

[...]
> Trying reverse patch debian/patches/remove-menu.s3m.patch at level 1 ... 0
> ... 2 ... failure.
This of course fails, because the patched files have been removed with
the build-tree.
