Up until and including the occurence reported above, I had the screensaver set to go on automatically from the control center after a few minutes of inactivity. I think, although not sure, that the machine had been suspended for more than that in that instance. Anyway, I've since disabled the control center screensaver option. I also had an added a script under /etc/acpi/resume.d as detailed here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=421017 which I removed. I also removed Ksysguard. I had never added anything using the knotify framework. After these steps, I can no longer reproduce this problem.
