To be useful I wanted to provide a little extra update on this.
When I had reported the bug I had found this following page with a
procedure to fix it:

However at the time it didn't work. I can now confirm that after
upgrading from etch to lenny this procedure has worked so something was
fixed along the way.
Given that this all works now, I suggest this bug be closed.
