I really have no idea where this comes from:

~ > fc-match Sans
DejaVu-Sans.ttf: "DejaVu Sans" "Book"
~ > fc-match Unicode
DejaVu-Sans.ttf: "DejaVu Sans" "Book"
~ > fc-list | grep -i unicode
Arial Unicode
MS:style=Regular,Normal,obyčejné,Standard,Κανονικά,Normaali,Normál,Normale,Standaard,Normalny,Обычный,Normálne,Navadno,Arrunta
~ > grep -r -i arial .gconf* .gnome* .gtkrc-* .galeon/
.gtkrc-2.0:#gtk-font-name = "Arial 9"
~ >

Of course, the more important question is:

It's the commercial "Arial Unicode MS" font that came with my Windows
XP (or Office, don't remember) installation. Note that I've been
using this font without problems on Debian Sarge. Only on Etch do I
get these dumps.

Ralph
