Yeah, the problem persists, I'm having this problem in two mail servers. I've setup a script to detect nscd breakages, which deletes the database and restarts nscd. It still fails again some hours later.
In addition, when performing lots of nscd queries (i.e., ls -l over a huge dir) I sometimes get a SIGABRT inside getpwuid().
