Thanks for the amazingly fast response!
Sounds like X starts up properly but your session exits. Anything
relevant in ~/.xsession-errors?
Nothing that looks suspicious: apart from some fluxbox config-not-set
warnings which I've grepped out:
cat .xsession-errors | grep -v "Failed to read" | grep -v "Setting default"
Xsession: X session started for root at Wed Jun 27 15:09:10 BST 2007
Warning: Failed to open file(/usr/share/fluxbox/nls/en_GB/fluxbox.cat)
for translation, using default messages.
apps file failure
I had done a fluxbox restart since the update with no ill-effects, it was
only on restarting X that it fails to start, sadly.
