Given how the XDG format is derivated from Debian's own menu and has become
standard accross the board on a wide variety of desktop environments and window
managers, migrating Debian's menu system to XDG would be extremely desirable.

For one thing, this would save maintainers of applications packages lot of work
in creating menu entries and in patching upstream WM code to support Debian's
own
menu system. Once the transition is done, they would be leveraging the existing
XDG menu entry that is included in upstream packages.

Likewise, migrating every WM's menu support to XDG can be readily accomplished
by
borrowing code from a plethora of possible sources, such as GNOME and KDE. Heck,
many other window managers can already support the XDG standard out of the box.

Granted, the transition period will make a few teeth grind, but we only need to
do this once. Afterwards, we will only be supporting the standard.
