Based on this, I consider highly unlikely that this is implemented in the PO format itself and it's supported by gettext, so there is little sense in keeping this as a gettext bug. I'm reassigning this bug back to po-debconf in case the maintainer wants to implement anything around this idea. My recommendation would be to just close this report.
