Here's what I did to solve it.

I ran "mysqld --skip-grant" as root, then I logged in with "mysql" without any
password as user root.

Then I ran "repair table [bla] use_frm;" where [bla] represents all the names
of the tables that I found in /var/lib/mysql/mysql/ (without the suffix, of
course).  Now my mysql users had gone, but at least mysqld starts again.

Now I had to recreate two users in my database (root with supercow powers and
a regular user), and then ran "dpkg-reconfigure mysql-server-5.0" to configure
the debian-sys-maint user.
