They are all zipped in /usr/share/games/wesnoth/wesnoth-coredata.zip and 
wesnoth uses them directly from there.

You can list the content using "unzip -l":
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/share/games/wesnoth$ unzip -l wesnoth-coredata.zip | 
grep 
png | wc -l

Using Konqueror or other modern file manager you can easily have a look at the 
images and extract them easily.
