The relevant part of the build log appears to be (from the main configure
output):
...
checking for g++ option to produce PIC... -fPIC
checking if g++ PIC flag -fPIC works... no
checking if g++ static flag -static works... no
checking if g++ supports -c -o file.o... no
...
I've attached a patch which fixes the compilation for me. (Although it
directly patches configure, so I won't tag the bug +patch.)
