I patched cryptsetup with your new patch. It works nicely.

The output is better cause it states "maybe the password is wrong".

Only cosmetics left. It currently looks like this (view with fixed width 
font):

Enter passphrase:
The device /dev/mapper/crypted-hda7 does not contain a valid XFS filesystem
 - the check for '/dev/mapper/crypted-hda7' failed - maybe the password is 
wrong
 - 
 -  removing the crypto device crypted-hda7 -
 - retrying for crypted-hda7

There is one line that only contains " - " and a superfluuos space and "-" at 
the end of the line "removing the crypto device".

Well these are rather minor issues and might well be postponed until lsb init 
script functions are used. ;-)
