The problem is that we're calling make clean instead of make dist-clean. The reason for doing this is that the upstream packages wrongly (I think) delete configure and makefile.in on make dist-clean, and hence the package is no longer buildable after it is cleaned. I've not had chance to work out exactly what needs changing to fix this yet though.
