If the symlink is not present and you try to access the manpages using
the "Erlang" menu at the top, it complains about directories. If the symlink is
present, it appears as you can access the manpages but then you got a "not
found" for each search. The problem is that the manpages are compressed,
for example, if you do "cd /usr/lib/erlang/man/man1 ; gzip -d zzdir.1.gz",
an you have the symlink, then you will access without error to the zzdir
module manpage from erlang-mode. Please check this patch to make
erlang-mode capable of using compressed manpages:

(and maybe create a bug report for erlang-mode with this information).
