Well, for various reasons I am (still) in an latin1(5) environment,
thus working with utf-8 is a little cumbersome.
But in principle latin1 should not be a problem, as long as it is
properly declared. (I assume that this is also supported by the line
you cite, where I don't know who printed it, though).

vim can only handle utf-8 under X, unfortunately.
