I assume the installer used "ati" as a video driver in your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf. Old ati driver (such as 6.6.3) had a bug in their
detection code. You might want to replace "ati" with "radeon" and see if
it helps.

Brice, thanks for your help on this but I think you should take it off
your list.
I tried to get the console up but never could. I did a fresh net install
with "auto64 video=ofonly" from debian.se to my 2nd hard drive with
successful reboot.
I then tried ALT_CONTROL_F1 at the screen blank, but that didn't work.
Then I restarted and tried typing in "/usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script
3>&1".
No response there either.
I feel lost and way out of my league. I feel like I'm standing at the
blackboard with particle physicists trying to keep up with a basic math
education.
I'll stick with the Mac OSX.
