..decided to do this your apt-get way on re-reading.

..this needed apt-get install dpkg-dev and un-tar'ing the orig gz ball.

..got this far then the box was shut down, Wojtek 
forgot I was on ssh 2 floors down.  ;o) Ma~nana.
