To whom it may concern, What I observe when I try this example:
solve([n*force*cos(alpha) + n^2 + n = X, n*force*sin(alpha) + n^2 + n = Y], [n, force]); in Maxima 5.12.0 + Windows or 5.13.0 + Windows or 5.13.0 + Centos Linux, is that Maxima thinks for a while (maybe 60 s) and then returns an empty list, i.e. [] . However from what I can tell that is a spurious result; the equations actually have 2 solutions, which if I'm not mistaken can obtained by solving one equation for force, substituting that into the other one, and solving the resulting quadratic for n. If someone has time maybe this example could be reported to the Maxima bug tracker, in case someone works on the solve function at some point.
