Having uninstalled git-core to get the build working, I am unable to reproduce the build failure. I tried building 1.5.3 with both the etch and etch-backports versions of git-core installed (one at a time, obviously). Both builds succeeded.
Please close, I can't reproduce the odd state I was in.
