Long before submitting the bug report, I changed my sources.list to the following:
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian etch main contrib non-free deb http://security.debian.org etch/updates main contrib non-free deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian sarge main contrib non-free deb http://security.debian.org sarge/updates main contrib non-free deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US sarge/non-US main contrib non-free But the problem persisted. It never occured to me that some way old packages from backports.org could be out-versioning etch-current packages. It was a lot of trouble to get those stinking packages off my system and get back to normal, but finally it works. Thanks very much for your insight.
