Try starting apache with strace -f /etc/init.d/apache2 start 2>&1 |fgrep test.pl (test.pl being the name of your script, of course) and do the request. What ist the output? Is /cgi-bin/test.pl the request you do in the browser? How is it mapped to /home/nick/public_html/cgi-bin/test.pl ?
