Unfortunately, I think this needs some support from the rhythmbox package. My understanding of this area is deficient, but it seems that somewhere in the morass of GNOME MIME support and vfs, some configuration file is needed to make this work magically. At least, several hours' research has not turned up a way of making either epiphany or firefox/iceweasel use rhythmbox-client to stream MP3s (although firefox at least will happily download and then hand off the MP3, but that's not the point). The one browser I can get to work is Opera, which not being integrated with the free desktop is at least thoroughly configurable. Setting "rhythmbox-client --play-uri" as the handler for MP3 MIME types makes things work beautifully. So this should not be a hard thing to implement. There's an Ubuntu bug on this subject filed against Firefox: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/62430 but unfortunately the thread became side-tracked talking about low-level configuration rather than just making the damn thing work.
