How about:
md5sum `cat /var/lib/dpkg/info/udev.conffiles`

And comparing those checksums against those shown by dpkg -s udev 

Whilst you're at it hal's conffiles might be different too though you'll
be aware that we're mostly clutching at straws here.

Also just for a quick check since I can't reproduce it here having
upgraded unstable, could you install the version that we supply and not
your local version in case something went awry with your build.

If anyone else can reproduce it we'd love to hear from you.
