How about: md5sum `cat /var/lib/dpkg/info/udev.conffiles` And comparing those checksums against those shown by dpkg -s udev Whilst you're at it hal's conffiles might be different too though you'll be aware that we're mostly clutching at straws here. Also just for a quick check since I can't reproduce it here having upgraded unstable, could you install the version that we supply and not your local version in case something went awry with your build.
