Woo hoo! That did it. It also got rid of an annoying white line at the bottom of my screen that's
been there forever. Thanks so much! I've donated $25 to the Debian project as a token of my gratitude.

Try adding
Option "Monitor-LVDS" "Configured Monitor"
to the Device section of your xorg.conf.
The driver seems to be using your monitor section for the VGA output
by default (probably because VGA-0 is first in the list of outputs
supported by your board).
