I've asked the debian kernel maintainers and they also have no clue why any of the changes between -2 and -3 would be related in any way. I guess we'll have to leave this as a mystery... If someone can reproduce, we'll reopen the bug and investigate it again then. The information you provided will hopefully be of good value if the problem will need to be debugged in the future.
