Guessnet is still mantained and actually Enrico rewrote a large part of it in past few days. Latest version is 0.43 and has been uploaded to experimental. I believe some of the problems you are reporting may be fixed there.
Just one thing, apropos problem 2). Mapping directives are passed by ifupdown to guessnet-ifupdown via stdin. If you cat /dev/null as you seem to be doing in your test setup, mapping directives are not processed.
