Yes; After the problems post upgrade, I moved ~/.mozilla-thunderbird and it started working again fine straight away.
It was more an annoyance having to copy back across the message filters than anything serious, although I suspect a user who didn't think to remove the thunderbird dir, or know where it was located, would have more trouble.
