Did you select Sun Java 5 once? That's The path where it once was (as it
was .06)

1.5 != 1.6 :)

I don't believe this is a sane solution.

That said, I can't reproduce this with what will become 2.3.1-1 soon,
though (but there shouldn't be any changes affecting this, though). It
recognizes all 3 JREs and I can choose Sun Java 5 and Sun Java 6 with
their correct paths (OOo not complaining afterwards).

What version is openoffice.org-java-common itself?

Can you - if upgrading openoffice.org-java-common to a matching version
if you still have the 2.2.1 one from lenny installed - does not help,
does it help wehn you remove javasettings_x86.xml from your profile and
start over?
