Does this happen in version 3.0.0?
In older versions, the Release and Packages files sometimes got "out
of sync" in the approx cache. You could try removing
/var/cache/approx/FOO/dists/etch/volatile/Release*
(where FOO is whatever maps to the volatile repo in your approx.conf)
and re-running it.
