That sounds like a duplicate of #446084.
Ok, merging...
The reporter of that bug sayed that emacs22-gtk did not have the problem, so you may want to switch to that flavor (it looks better than the lucid version anyway).
It's probably a toolkit problem. I'll try the Gtk version, but I have similar issues with another Gtk app (Firefox, see #440303).
